Yakiniku Great

Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) has been really popular in recent years and Hong Kong has a number of options all over the city. Yakiniku Great is the best that I've tried but is also the most expensive. We ordered two tasting menus to be shared between 4 girls and it was definitely enough food! I think we may have added one dish? I love my meat but I think that it must be quite filling for one person to eat an entire tasting menu.

Gyukaku

Gyukaku is a popular Japanese yakiniku chain with numerous international outposts such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and here in New York. Gyukaku serves affordable yakiniku in a casual setting and is a good choice for a fun meal with friends. W and I decided to meet M for lunch one day and we left the establishment very full. The cuts were not very premium as expected and I felt that the marinade was much too salty and heavy for some dishes. However, for the price you pay we had a pretty decent meal. I also really loved the s'mores dessert at the end. My favorite yakiniku in New York is Takashi but the prices are also much higher as compared to Gyukaku. I have also been meaning to try Futago (a favorite while I was in Hong Kong) but have always had scheduling conflicts.

Yakiniku Futago Again

I went to Futago when I visited HK for a weekend and wanted to go again before I went back to NYC. You can find my initial post here. Once again it was super delicious and we made sure that we did not drink as much sake as last time hehe.

Yakiniku Futago

Futago is a popular yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) from Tokyo where there are more than 20 outlets. Futago means "twins" in Japanese which refer to the founders of the restaurant who are twin brothers.  I was excited to try this place and it was really yummy but I wish I was not drinking sake and shochu like water because the 2nd half of the dinner was definitely quite hazy. I didn't even take the obligatory shot of the beef and uni dish that everyone loves to instagram! But no worries because I will definitely be returning. The meats were very yummy and the prices were also very reasonable. The atmosphere is also comfortable and the waiter was friendly and I definitely give him props for being able to not get too annoyed at these 4 ridiculous drunk girls and helping us take lots of pictures :)

Takashi

Takashi is one of my favorite spots in the city and is a must visit when T is in town. Apart from the infamous Niku-uni, everything else on that menu is just as delicious. T is obsessed with the yooke and the sweet bread is also TO DIE FOR. You can only make  reservations for 4 people or more so when T and I go we usually put our name down and go to the restaurant/bar down the street to have a drink. Normal cuts of meat are delicious here but this place is a haven for those who enjoy special and unique bits of the cow. Here is the menu :) There is a platter named the tongue experience where they give you various parts of the ox tongue and I thought that was pretty cheeky. I didn't take any pictures of the yakiniku but everything I've tried has also been top notch.

Niku-Uni - chuck flap topped with sea urchin and fresh wasabi
This dish is definitely an instagram favorite. I initially was not too sure about the harmony of the flavors because it seemed like a dish that just piled a lot of good things together without really thinking of the end flavor profile, but this was actually DELICIOUS. The texture of the fatty chuck flap was melt in your mouth and the uni was fresh and sweet. The seaweed added the needed crunch and the shisho leaf gave the perfect herby kick to take this dish to the next level. A MUST ORDER.

Yooke - thinly-sliced chuck eye tartare in special sauce
This is my baby's favorite dish and I wish I could feed him this all the time! The special sauce is so flavorful and has a lovely sweet profile. The meat is super fresh and cut to the perfect size. Yum!

I highly recommend Takashi! The staff is really friendly and the atmosphere is cute and comfortable. Just do remember that you will come out smelling like delicious grilled meats.
