Chomp Chomp

Chomp Chomp serves Singaporean and Malaysian Hawker food and since I LOVE cereal prawn I was really excited to try it out with G. I thought the meal was pretty good but I think it lacked a little bit of that extra oomph. However, I did have a enjoyable meal and think it is a decent choice if you want these dishes in a less hectic atmosphere as compared to Nyonya.

Crispy Cereal and Curry Leaves Crusted Head On Prawns
While the dish itself was perfectly fine, it was just mediocre when compared to the cereal prawns I had in the actual hawker centers in Singapore. The cereal coating was not as crunchy and decadent and prawns were also not as juicy and meaty. I did love devouring the shrimp heads though.

Kerabu Sotong - Spicy Calamari Salad with Tomatoes, Cucumber, Mint, Galangal, and Calamansi
I am an avid hater of cilantro so I had to carefully pick away each stem before eating this dish. The flavors were refreshing and the calamari was tender and meaty. I loved the crunch of the cucumber and the juicy plump tomatoes along with the crispy garlic on top.

Chye Tao Kueh - Fried Radish Cake, Shrimp, Chinese Sausage, Chives
Yum yum yum I love turnip cake! This was a very satisfying dish but I think it would be even better if the turnip cake was a bit more brown (but that could be just me as I like this EXTRA crispy). It was pretty good but could use a slight flavor kick. I am no expert in Singaporean cuisine but it just seemed to lack a little something.

Char Kway Teow - Wok Fried Rice Noodles with Clams and Shrimp
I really enjoyed this dish! Flat noodles are some of my favorite types of noodles and the savory and sweet sauce was excellent.
Overall I think Chomp Chomp is worth a try but probably not the best Singaporean food in the city (and probably a little pricier than some places). However, the atmosphere is lovely and the staff are incredibly warm so I would recommend coming here if you are in the mood for some Singaporean dishes!

Laut

I haven't seen V in a while and I suggested we visit Laut in Union Square because it was on my ever expanding list of places to eat. V was super excited and told me that she used to visit all the time because she used to live near Union Square before she moved to Williamsburg. The food definitely did not disappoint and I would love to return. Our waiter was super duper friendly and maybe even a teensy bit overly perky but it was not a big problem, I guess he was just having a good day. The only annoying thing was this group of girls next to us that were talking SO loud and also snickered at me using my friends iphone light to shine on the food while I took a photo, but I could care less because now I have good pictures for a new post ha!

Roti Telur - Pancake Filled with Eggs, Scallion, Onion & Pepper Served with Curry Dippings
The pancake skin was thin and had a great balance of chewiness and crunchiness from the exterior. I also enjoyed the filling of the egg and scallion. The curry dipping was perfect with the pancake and it was a great start to our meal. I will want to try the regular roti next time also.

Hainan Chicken Rice - Roasted Chicken (with bone), Sesame Oil, Soy Sauce, Ginger, Garlic, Chili Sauce, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Cilantro & Served with Chicken Flavored Rice
The hainan chicken was not cooked in the way that I was used to and the skin was much more brown and fried but this version was super yummy as well. The rice was infused with flavor and the dipping sauce was tangy and spicy. The chicken was juicy and they give you a generous amount.

Char Kueh Teow - Flat Broad Noodles with Chives, Bean Sprouts, Eggs & Soy Sauce with Home-made Chili Sauce (with Chinese Sausage upon request)
I loooove Char Kueh Teow and Laut's version was scrumptious. I highly recommend the addition of Chinese sausage. The noodle was fried well and was at the right dryness and not greasy. The  ratio of of veggies, egg, and sausage to noodle was also perfect. The noodles were saturated with the sauce and had a delicious chewy yet soft texture (those who like hor fun or similar flat noodles should know what I mean!)
I really enjoyed Laut and would definitely come again!

Sabah Malaysian Cuisine

Wanchai is not an area that I frequent but I know that there are many interesting and delicious restaurants there. My good friend suggested that we try out this restaurant one night and I was excited to get out of my usual comfort zone of Central and Causeway Bay for some scrumptious Malaysian food.

Fried turnip cake with shrimp, bean sprouts, and egg
Turnip cake is one of my favorite things to eat and mixed with all these other goodies made it extra interesting. The sprouts gave the dish a nice crunch and the egg added a delicious creamy aspect. The turnip cake was fried to a crispy perfection (I like it extra crispy) and resulted in a very fulfilling dish.

Chicken satays
The pieces of chicken were generous and the meat was juicy and succulent. The satays were full of flavor and had a nice smoky char to some of the pieces. Yum.

Laksa
The soup was quite flavorful and very creamy but definitely not as good as the laksa at my good friend L's house. I also didn't like how the noodles were thin vermicelli as I like the noodles to be a little more chewy and firm. Decent but not amazing.

Banana roti
The rotis are made fresh and you can often catch the chef flipping the rotis into the air at one side of the restaurant. The banana roti was crispy on the outside and oozed out with a mushy sweet banana filling. I personally prefer the plain roti but this was made very well and tasted very interesting with the spicy and salty dishes.

Beef rendang
This dish was bursting with flavor and it was a flavor explosion with each bite. It was quite spicy and had a very strong seasoning. The beef was tender and this went very well with the roti. Not something I could have all the time since it is quite strong but delicious for a once in a while treat!
