Tai Ping Koon (太平館)

Tai Ping Koon is a famous old school restaurant that serves Hong Kong style western cuisine. It has been around for ages (founded in 1860?!) and the interior of the restaurant is reminiscent of the restaurant's rich history. When you walk in you feel like you have traveled back in time. The restaurant has a large range of famous dishes and I came with high expectations.

Warm brioche :)
Mmm this was so delicious. The brioche is warm and fluffy with a slightly sweet flavor. Loved it.

Portugese Chicken
This was a disappointment. The sauce was not aromatic of flavorful, it was gooey and lumpy with a few pieces of rough chicken and potatoes floating around. I was expecting a creamy delicious sauce with large chunks of tender chicken to go with a huge bowl of rice but was given this. Will not order again.

Famous Swiss Chicken Wings
This is one of the restaurants most famous dishes. The chicken wings are drenched in this savory sauce and the skin is infused with the flavor. Although it was yummy, I wouldn't say it was amazing. The skin was a little too fatty.
Overall the experience was a bit of a let down. I have had other friends come here and said that it was delicious therefore maybe I will give this restaurant another chance in the future and order different things.

Claypot Rice at 永合成餐廳餅店

The first time I went to this restaurant was when I was working in Sheung Wan and my colleagues and I went for our lunch break. This restaurant is well known for its clay pot rice and therefore always super busy and crowded. The atmosphere is that of a typical Hong Kong Cha Chan Teng (teashop), nothing fancy but usually with great food. I love how you can see various generations of the family helping out. If you come later some popular claypot dishes such as eel will be sold out, which is what happened to us :(.

Beef and egg claypot rice
The beef was flavorful and I'm always a sucker for soft cooked runny eggs but I felt that the ratio of meat/egg to rice was to little. I also didn't think the rice was fragrant enough and there wasn't the obligatory crispy layer of rice on the bottom of the pot. It's a fine meal, but did not live up to its fame and hype.

Chicken and mushroom claypot rice
Once again, the chicken had nice flavor but it would be nice if it was less fatty and had more meat.

Traditional Hong Kong Milk Tea
Mmm this was yummy. The milk tea was really strong and aromatic. You can taste the richness of the milk and it is devilishly sweet.

Cute little surprise at the bottom of my cup ;)

BBQ at Lantau

My good friend invited me to her getaway home in Lantau where we got to bike to a waterfall, play in the beautiful pool, then stuff our faces with a scrumptious BBQ.

A wonderful day with good friends and good food :)

Nha Trang Vietnamese Cuisine

Nha Trang has been one of my favorites since a good friend of mine introduced it to me a long time ago. Since then it has gotten more and more popular and now there is always a wait for a table. It serves delicious Vietnamese food and is in Central which is really convenient for me. The prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is also comfortable. The wait usually looks a lot more intimidating than it actually is, the line may look long but I would usually be seated in around 15-20 minutes because the turnover rate is quite fast with people bustling to go back to work and such.

Soft shell crab roll
The delicious crunchy crab is wrapped in a soft paper thin rice sheet along with some fresh crunchy radish, lettuce, and cucumber. The crab is seasoned perfectly and also has a good amount of meat. Delish!

Beef brisket curry
The curry is very flavorful and the beef is tender. I also love the eggplant because it soaks up all the flavors of the curry. The dish is topped off with some crispy shallots and scallions.

Raw beef pho
A classic. The beef is thinly sliced and cooked in the simmering broth which is packed with flavors. The noodles have a nice bite to them. This is the perfect comfort food.

Feast :D
We ordered some other things but I did not get a picture of each dish. Everything was delicious though

Beef Rice :3

Simple and delicious meal. Sauteed onions, mushrooms, and chunks of beef with a runny egg. Will post recipe another time.

Fofo Part II

As I said before Fofo is a restaurant I go frequently so here are another set of pictures from there :)

Scallop ceviche, avocado, and crispy shallots
The scallop is seasoned very well and the shallots add a nice crispy kick to the juicy and creamy texture of the scallops.

Organic eggs cooked at 62° in crispy and onion "nest" with chorizo
This is less heavy than the foie gras version which was good since the potato and onion nest is already quite heavy. It would be nice if the chorizo was a little less hard but it was still quite yummy,

Pan fried foie gras with truffle and confit onion montaditos
I am a huge sucker for foie but the foie gras was not very aromatic and rich. The classic foie flavor was not as strong as I would like. The truffle is also a bit weak. Probably would not order this again.

Tonkichi Tonkatsu Seafood

Mmmmm one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong. The tonkatsu is incredibly delicious and is always a huge treat. The only bad thing is that this restaurant always has a super long wait but it is definitely worth it. It is relatively expensive for a lunch set but once again, it is worth it. The food is delicious and servings are also very big.

Tonkatsu and Prawn Set
The pork is very tender and covered with a crispy panko surface. The panko is fried to a crispy perfection and is not greasy at all. The prawns are of a very generous size and covered with the same crunchtastic panko crust. The panko crust is not too thick, when you bite down, there is first that crunch before tasting the juicy and perfectly marinated prawn and pork meat. There is an unlimited serving of cabbage and rice. There are two delicious types of cabbage dressing at the table along with the classic tonkatsu sauce. The cabbage is a nice fresh side dish to balance the deep fried meats. The rice is not too mushy and is a perfect match with the crunchy delicious deep fried prawns and pork. I salivate just thinking about this dish. Tartare sauce is also one of my favorite things so that with the prawn is just a dream come true :)

Katsu-don
Sometimes the pork cutlet is a bit soggy because of the egg mixture but this was actually still crispy and this created a perfect balance between the silky savory egg mixture on top of the rice.

Sushi Kuu

Sushi Set for 2
The sushi is quite fresh and the price was very reasonable for this large amount of sushi. Was not mind blowing but was of good quality. Sushi Kuu is also located in Lan Kwai Fong so the prices were relatively reasonable for being in such a popular location.

Modern China Restaurant (金滿庭)

Modern China Restaurant's food is similar to that of Crystal Jade but a little bit better. You can tell that the more care and attention have been put into the dishes here than at Crystal Jade but Crystal Jade has some types of dim sum that Modern China Restaurant doesn't have. Both restaurants are very popular and usually have long lines during peak meal hours. The interior design of Modern Chinese Restaurant is also a little bit more exotic. Prices of both restaurants are around the same, Modern Chinese Restaurant may be slightly more expensive.
